Sisters from Another Mister

Cynthia Laroche and Fatima Devine may not be biological sisters, but they are truly sisters in all the ways that count. Since their middle school days, they have been close friends through thick and thin, supporting each other through decades of life experiences both good and bad, including the absurd, the sad, the silly, and the sublime.

While Cynthia brings creativity and artistic skills into their partnership, Fatima brings her experience and skills in the fields of psychotherapy, education, and writing. Together, they are a dynamic duo whose skills and personalities complement each other seamlessly.

Fatima’s husband, George was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2018 at the age of 65. They have been together since they were freshmen in college, and have been married for over 45 years. Cynthia has known George since the couple met and has been close friends with him ever since. 

When Cynthia and Fatima attended the annual Caregivers’ Journey conference held by the Alzheimer’s Association in April of 2019, they were inspired to work collaboratively on a project to help families affected by the disease, and the idea for My Forever Superhero was born. Although the two friends had discussed the notion of collaborating on a book previously, they left the conference feeling energized and ready to begin the project. The end result was this book, which is a unique combination of a story written and illustrated in the style of a graphic novel and a user-friendly self-help book for families affected by Early Onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Cynthia and Fatima are committed to having a positive impact on families who are facing the difficult journey involved in dealing with Alzheimer’s, raising awareness of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and providing information and tools to help people with coping with stress in general. These longtime friends and now literary collaborators believe in the healing power of humor, mindfulness, and creativity.
